DavidMcNamara: Rock, paper, scissors referee had done it before
A referee who was banned for using rock, paper, scissors at the start of a Women’s Super League match had done it on multiple occasions before, talkSPORT has learned.Initially, it was suggestedDavidMcNamarahad forgotten his coin and had to think on his feet in the centre circle before Manchester City vs Reading on 26 October.McNamara took charge of the game last month2
McNamara took charge of the game last month
Mr McNamara has been contacted for a response. As football’s rule book requires a coin toss to decide kick-off, Mr McNamara received a 21 day ban from the Football Association for ‘not acting in the best interests of the game’ at the WSL fixture. The suspension prompted hundreds of referees to use rock, paper, scissors at grassroots matches in support of MrMcNamara, believing he had been punished for an innocent mistake. But talkSPORT has seen messages posted on a referees group chat, revealing he chose to use the game at the start of the televised match.Other sources have confirmed MrMcNamarahas a history of using rock, paper, scissors.Martin Cassidy, the CEO of Ref Support UK, which has been assisting MrMcNamara since he was penalised, said: “Match officials around the world took a risk of being charged in order to supportDavid. They will feel let down and a little bit embarrassed to discover that this has been possibly premeditated.”

FA statement on McNamara's suspension

“The FA can confirm that referee David McNamara has been suspended for 21 days, starting from Monday 26 November, after accepting a charge of ‘not acting in the best interests of the game’.“This follows an incident in the FA WSL match between Manchester City and Reading on Friday 26 October when he failed to determine which team would kick off the match by the toss of a coin, as required by the Laws of the Game.”talkSPORT understands the FA is aware MrMcNamara‘s use of rock, paper, scissors on October 26 was not an isolated incident. His appeal is currently being considered at Wembley.Days after he received his suspension, a photo appeared on Facebook of the match official receiving a coin from the Royal Navy Football Association.2Despite the development, Martin Cassidy still describes the 21 day ban as ‘disproportionate’.He insists the grassroots action should prompt change.“Particularly in youth football, referees said rock, paper, scissors was a positive engagement with young players. We would love to see a change in the rules to say that in Under 12s matches, referees can use it during the kick off procedure.”
