Lucas Torreira will be suspended for three matches as Arsenal failed to appeal the red card he was shown in last weekend’s north London derby draw with Tottenham.Torreira, the midfielder, was introduced as a half-time substitute on Saturday and was dismissed by referee Anthony Taylor during injury time after catching Danny Rose with his studs in a sliding challenge.1Arsenal appealed the card but the Football Association have decided the 23-year-old must serve a three-match ban.The decision means Torreira is ruled out of Sunday’s clash against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, before later missing the home game with Newcastle on April 1 and the trip to Everton on April 7.The north London derby ended in a 1-1 draw after Hugo Lloris saved a last-minute penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Harry Kane had earlier levelled from 12 yards when Spurs were awarded a controversial spot kick of their own. What is expected goals?

• Expected goals (xG) is a statistic used to work out how many goals should be scored in a match.
• Every single shot is awarded an xG value based on the difficulty of the attempt, with factors including distance from goal, type of shot and number of defenders present affecting the value.
• The higher the xG of a particular shot, the more likely a goal should be scored from that shot.
• The xG valueof every shot in a game is then used to calculate the expected goals in a particular match.

 Should a team end with a higher xG than actual goals scored, it is probable they were wasteful in front of goal due to poor finishing or an in-form opposition goalkeeper. If the real goals scored is higher than the xG, the team may have been lucky to score so many in that match, or have an above average finisher scoring hard chances others would miss.
