Real Madrid: Santiago Solari will take the hit, but hes not to blame for their demise
Santiago Solari first started working with Real Madrid almost two decades ago, so he knows how this story goes.As head coach the Argentinian will be the first person held responsible for Los Blancos exit from the Champions League, a disastrous finish to a six-day period in which they have ‘lost’ three trophies assuming 12 points is an insurmountable gap in La Liga.Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari3

But the biggest contributing factors to losing out on that silverware predate the former Madrid midfielder. The writing has been on the wall for some time, and Zinedine Zidanes departure last summer has now proven to be impeccably timed. The three-time European Cup winning coach felt sufficiently convinced to make that decision to leave before the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo had even occurred. Zidane had already seen enough. That provides some perspective on what Solari had to work with.Unlike the coach who started the current campaign, Julen Lopetegui, Solari didnt even have a pre-season with which to try and implement his ideas. Working with little time, with someone elses squad, he was asked to try and keep a sinking ship afloat. A veteran would have struggled under those conditions, let alone someone with the Argentines limited experience. The limits of his tired squad were exposed for the world to see on Tuesday. Madrids resistance lasted all of about five minutes: Ajaxs first goal saw the home team make amateur mistakes and sliced open with alarming ease, Hakim Ziyech completely unmarked as he fired home after receiving from Duan Tadi, who had all the time in the world to pick him out.In the barrage that followed Madrid repeatedly lost 50-50 battles, gave the ball away straight after recovering possession, and made positional errors that a well-drilled, hungry Ajax delighted in taking advantage of. Casemiro being turned inside out, Zidane-style, by Tadi in the build-up to the second away goal of four spoke volumes about the confidence the Dutch visitors had in their plan.Ajaxs historic win was a victory for exactly that combination planning and hunger. Precisely what Madrid have lacked. Their failure to restructure following the loss of Ronaldo remains baffling, and it is now evident that the pride of a supremely talented but worn squad that has conquered everything in front of them in recent years is not sufficiently strong to paper over the cracks when it really matters.Cristiano Ronaldo lifts the last of his four Champion League trophies with Real Madrid.3

Solari has tried everything at his disposal to shake things up and has made brave calls that others with less spine may not have risked. Calls like relegating veterans he feels are no longer up to scratch from the starting eleven or even the squad, or throwing his weight behind unglamorous youngsters like Sergio Reguiln. And even if Vincius Jnior was a more natural finisher than the wildly inaccurate player he is at the moment, he was never going to replace the circa 50 goals a season that were guaranteed from a finished article and all-time great like Ronaldo. To top it all off, even luck, a factor Madrid have been able to fall back on in the past on occasion, hasnt been on their side as of late. Vincius and Lucas Vzquez getting injured early on against Ajax meant Solaris game plan quickly went out the window, while even substitute Gareth Bale picked up an injury. Of no little inconvenience to the manager too was Sergio Ramos absence: needlessly suspended, the defenders ability from set-pieces and leadership would have helped Madrids cause, but instead he worsened matters for his coach.Ramos’ suspension cost Real Madrid against Ajax.3
Ramos’ suspension cost Real Madrid against Ajax.
In the final stretch of Tuesdays Round of 16 clash, a youthful, energetic Ajax stroked the ball around to the sound of ‘ols’ in Madrids back yard. That said it all. A humiliating end to a fourth consecutive loss at the Bernabu. The last nail in the coffin of a glorious era of European dominance, and one that must be followed by the careful first steps of a new period, if Los Blancos are to regenerate effectively. That will surely mean new players in the summer, as well as the departure of some old ones, several of whom have looked worn-out and past their best this season. It will also mean a new coach. Even if the timing wasnt ideal, no one can begrudge Solari from doing what anyone who cared about Real Madrid would have done by taking the opportunity to step up from the B team, and there is no doubt that he gave everything he was capable of.The decision over who follows next will be pivotal. A fresh direction and springboard for new success, or a further step backwards.

Manchester City 1-0 Leicester: Vincent Kompany stunner sends City top and breaks Liverpool hearts
Vincent Kompany scored a goal worthy of winning any title race as Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a tense 1-0 victory over Leicester. The City captain ended Leicester’s resistance with a swerving 30-yard thunderbolt into the top corner, putting City a point above Liverpool heading into the final day.Kompany scored a belter3
Kompany scored a belter
With 20 minutes remaining, Liverpool were edging into the title driving seat as Brendan Rodgers’ side proved a tough nut to crack.Sergio Aguero saw a header denied on the line by Kasper Schmeichel and Raheem Sterling fluffed his lines on what proved a nervous night for the champions. But up stepped Kompany with a season-defining moment to give City their 13th consecutive league victory. And as Liverpool were looking for a favour from their former manager, City were given one by an ex-player when Kelechi Iheanacho missed a golden opportunity at the death. They will successfully defend their title with victory at Brighton next Sunday.A sign of City tension came as David Silva was booked for a cynical challenge on Tielemans which prevented a breakaway from inside his own half. But City then started to take control. Bernardo Silva weaved through the area to tee up Ilkay Gundogan but the German’s effort was blocked and Foden also fired into a crowded box.Kompany struck a thunderbolt from distance3
Kompany struck a thunderbolt from distance
Aguero hit the bar with a thumping header and Schmeichel did brilliantly to claw the ball off the line as it bounced down.Sterling was then denied in the area by a fine tackle from Wilfred Ndidi and further chances fell to Gundogan and Bernardo Silva as City finished the half on top. There was another moment of alarm, however, as Kompany was booked for bringing down James Maddison in full flow.City brought on Leroy Sane and poured all their efforts into attack after the break. Sterling and Bernardo Silva had half-chances before Gundogan dragged an effort wide.City appealed for another penalty as Sterling went down under a Hamza Choudhury challenge but nothing was given and the Foxes almost caught the hosts out as Maddison flashed an effort wide.Guardiola was a relieved man3
Guardiola was a relieved man
The tension increased and the anxiety was evident as Aguero was denied at point-blank range by Schmeichel after Evans miskicked. But such moments are made for Kompany, City’s man for the big occasion.Few expected the skipper to shoot when the ball fell to him 30 yards out but it sat up nicely and he let fly with a ferocious strike. Schmeichel had no chance as the ball swerved away from him into the top corner. The celebrations from Kompany, Guardiola and almost everyone connected with the home side were exuberant and emotional but the game still had to be closed out.Hearts will have been in mouths when former City striker Kelechi Iheanacho got clear but he missed the target. It was tight but City held on – and they have the edge heading into the final round of fixtures.

Harry Kane’s injury will be deeply concerning for Spurs
It is the third successive season that he has sustained an ankle injury, the most recent one keeping him out for a fortnight last March.Kane was injured after being caught in the middle of Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof as Spurs chased an equaliser against United. He received treatment after the full-time whistle before walking off the Wembley pitch extremely gingerly. The incident occurred at the end of the game2
The incident occurred at the end of the game
Kane did not emerge through the mixed zone after full-time as he was selected for a post-match doping test, so it was unclear how heavily he was walking or whether he had a foot brace on or needed crutches.Any lengthy absence for Kane would leave Spurs short of attacking options ahead of an important part of the season, with Son Heung-min away on international duty, Lucas Moura still injured himself and Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen expected to leave the club this month.Defender Jan Vertonghen is backing his team-mates to cover the potential absence of Kane and Son. “We have to assess the other cases as well but these two guys are just massive for us,” he said.“Especially over the last couple of months, they’ve been immense. We’ve got other great players.“They’re also vital for us but we hope they’ll both be back soon.”

Fresh from being crowned King of the Jungle, Redknapp was in great form with another brilliant tale from his Spurs days as he remembered his day on the job.And his overwhelming memory? Super Pavlyuchenko.Affectionately called Super Pav by fans, the Russian striker gained a reputation for scoring absolute belters in a Spurs shirt. But he also had supporters tearing their hair out over his laziness. And Redknapp said it took him no time at all to suss out the frontman, saying even his interpreter broke more of a sweat on the training pitch.Harry Redknapp with former Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko2

Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White, he said of Pavlyuchenko: He was an amazing talent. He had absolute dynamite in his boots, he could shoot and score amazing goals. But he was very laid back.I remember the first day I went to the club, we had a little practise game and I kept shouting at him to make runs.Im shouting at him and this guy kept running onto the pitch with a tracksuit on.I didnt know anybody, so I asked whos he?It was the interpreter and he ended up running about more than Pavlyuchenko!Arry has fond memories of his time at Tottenham where he enjoyed arguably the best spell of his career with successive top-four Premier League finishes and a run to the Champions League quarter-finals.And it appears he has a special fondness for Super Pav in particular, as he shared another story about the Russian star with his jungle campmates during his triumphant stint on Im a Celebrity
